Advice for animal owners

Advice for pet owners and livestock keepers on looking after the health and welfare of their animals during the coronavirus pandemic. Update issued 2 October.

his advice provides information for livestock keepers and those with pets on looking after the health and welfare of their animals during the coronavirus pandemic.

There is emerging evidence that some animals can become infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, following close contact with infected humans.  Globally, only a small number of incidents of infections in animals have been reported (about 50, compared to more than 13,000,000 human cases), the majority of which had contact with infected households or people. There is no evidence of the virus circulating in livestock in the UK and cases in pet animals are very rare. COVID-19 is driven by human to human transmission.

In line with general advice, you should wash your hands regularly with soap, including before and after contact with animals and animal products. You should avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth until hands have been thoroughly washed.
